For years I have been using a softball on my backs, hips and glutes. This is a really great video thanks for putting this up.
For those who are really sensitive, Chinese rubbing, shaking and grasping exercises usually Tui Na is the categorical name, self-massage will get the ‘gun shyness’ out of the muscles especially the IT band. Russian slapping works for many too, same science just different styles. The roller is the bomb and it can be used as interesting proprioceptive stressor for bodyweight training destabilization. That’s gold, good on you, cheers!
Smitty, these vids you put out are fantastic and extremely helpful. I progressed from a soft white foam, to the hard black, and now PVC. Thanks!
@specializedstrength
it’s a little bit more painful, but it’s ok. I do it on pvc pipe also, hurts like hell.
i bought a pvc pipe and i use that for my rolling, what do you think of the pvc pipe for rolling out?
Yes, it eventually will. If you keep doing it. If you only do it once a week though, it will never hurt less, do it once daily or every other day. Depending on soreness.
Awesome!
Have just performed my first SMR session on my newly arrived foam roller, thanks to smitty and the team at DieselCrew with this new video. Hurt like hell pretty much everywhere. Just rated 5 stars without a doubt. CHEERS SMITTY
I would like to see a video on self-treatment trigger point therapy if you have familiarity with that. I find two tennis balls in a sock to be great for targeting specific adhesions and trigger points.
foam rolling the IT band hurts like HELL. Does it hurt less over time?
great, ill be using the foam roller today
I’ve been noticing shoes on your vids -can it be used for boot camp?
You asked ‘Please’ and I try not to deny politeness. GREAT Video. I don’t know why I don’t own both the foam roller or the flow med ball. Especially after watching your video. Thanks Smitty.
I’ve tried this with my medicine ball and traction is less of a problem with the right clothing. A hoodie is a good choice. Great video Smitty.
You guys did it again!! Awesome, going to try these, Foam Rolling has saved my lifting for sure!!! Great job guys!!!
AWESOME! You guys always are pushing the envelope with up to date techniques the dip shit trainers at the gyms would never know about! Thanks!
Yes, they are, I love them.
Great vid. Thanks.
Awesome! I happen to have a medball just like yours! Great music selection as well
hey smitty, great ideas
you might want to look into systema mobility exercises – they have similar movements: focused for fighting by removing tension in the body from muscles, tendons and from triggered areas such as fear of falling etc.

are those sambo shoes?
Good stuff, Smitty. I reckon most gyms have med. balls, but not rollers so this is great to learn so you wont have to bring your own stuff with you.
However, even though the area of impact is smaller with ball, which should then apply more force to targeted area I’m wondering if you can apply enough press. for it to work as good as the roller. Its easy to keep your whole body on roller without losing balance, but on ball you’d have assist with knees and hands on ground taking off the pressure.
thanks smithy gonna give it a shot on my old bones
Excellent stuff this…
The upper body Med Ball work looks quite challenging as one may slip very easily.
